Hi,

We have an MS Exchange as main mail server with Porxmox before it.
Because of MS Exchange will be migrated to the new storage, we need to turn-off it.

Could you please tell me if proxmox will be bounced all incoming emails ?
If yes, do you have any idea how to do it to make proxmox as "mail buffer" for (for example) 24h ?

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris,

If the internal default relay is inaccessible, the emails should goes to the internal queue. for testing this, just change the default relay to a non existing ip address and send an email. this email should be stored, see "Administration/Mail queue". If you change it back, you can flush the queue. I suggest you test this before you start with the exchange migration.

If the default relay is not reachable, after 4 hours the sender is informed that the email is still not delivered but it will be tried again. (you can set this time: Configuration/Mail Proxy/Options - Delay warning hours). Proxmox tries to deliver the mails in the queue for a maximum time of 5 days.

Hey,

We are also preparing to start using the combination of Proxmox and MsExchange (SBS).

Do you use the recipient verification ("Verify Receivers") option (mail proxy configuration) of Proxmox ?

Cause I believe that if you are and you turn off the Exchange server, Proxmox might stop accepting mails into it's internal queue because it cannot verify the existence of the recipient address anymore on the Exchange server.
So it might be a good idea to switch off the recipient verification option in that case, at least if you configured the "definitive error 550" option for the "verify receivers" test

Hi,

I've just tested this solutions by redirect one of our domains to not-existing IP. In mail.log file on Proxmox, I can see message "status=deffered (connect to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx): Connection time out)"

"verify receivers" option has ben set to "no".

for now - looks ok :)

Thanks,
Chris
