Hello, I'm testing Proxmox 4 beta2, and would like to know if it's possible to make snapshots of LXC containers without suspend them (with LVM). For the moment, when I try to backup with vzdump, I'm receiving this :
100: oct. 03 00:00:02 INFO: mode failure - some volumes does not support snapshots
100: oct. 03 00:00:02 INFO: trying 'suspend' mode instead
Is it because I've just a /var/lib/vz LVM volume with dump directory inside ? I've forgotten to create a dedicated dump LVM volume at install witch target to /var/lib/vz/dump. And if it's the reason, someone could tell me how to create this ? Indeed, if I try umount /var/lib/vz, it's not possible because target is busy. Is it pvedaemon to stop before ? After I should be able to use resize2fs, lvreduce and lvcreate to make the job. Thanks a lot for your help.

We plan to support LVM thin pools in future. With that it will be possible to make efficient snapshots on LVM.
But snapshots on normal LVM are not implemented.

[h=3]Thinly-Provisioned Logical Volumes[/h]
By using thin provisioning, a storage administrator can over-commit the physical storage, often avoiding the need to purchase additional storage. For example, if ten users each request a 100GB file system for their application, the storage administrator can create what appears to be a 100GB file system for each user but which is backed by less actual storage that is used only when needed.

not sure if you want to use this - over-committing by design.... can hurt you sooner or later

benefit:

The only real benefit here is you get LVM thinly provisioned volumes and thin snapshots thanks to the new device mapper thin volume and snapshot capabilities. You get efficient CoW snapshots with Btrfs out of the box but many users are for various reasons not favourably disposed towards Btrfs, and LVM thin snapshots are a welcome alternative.

we can already created CT with lvm thin in proxmox 4 ?
