[SOLVED] Prevent W11 update and prompt (W10 VM)

Hello!

I have a Windows 10 VM under current Proxmox version (8). The VM is configured with Secure Boot and TPM 2.0. Windows detects that the VM can be updated to W11 and periodically prompts me to either install now o “maybe later”.

My issue is that I need this VM to stay on W10 for software compatibility reasons with legacy hardware so the update is a non-starter until the hardware breaks or needs to be replaced.

I also need to VM to be “on” 24/7 but whenever the prompt appears it seems that windows is not fully initiated until I reject the update so software and shares services aren’t always available.

All the info I find on the forum is how to update rather than how to prevent the prompt and the update. Any help?

Maybe don't use Secure Boot or TPM? I don't have such problems without it. Or maybe look at the Microsoft forums (as this does not sound Proxmox related at all)?

EDIT: I have never ran anything with virtual TPM or secure boot, and sorry for being not more creative.

Thanks! Do you know if I can remove either from a working installation? I can always try in a clone…

Or just "fixate" the OS-version (set to 22H2, the latest windows 10 version, or whatever current version you have/want to keep)

Do you know if I can remove either from a working installation?

TPM should work, UEFI will break your system. In order to get rid of UEFI, you need to reinstall in a VM which uses legacy BIOS instead of UEFI.

Thank you for all the help. For the moment I'll set the target version to 22H2 and if it persists I'll try removing TPM.
