Hi,
I use Proxmox 8.1.3 and installed as a guest Debian and Window Server.

I use Debian as File Server. But unfortuntely it has poor speed performance. I need to know the reason;

1- From Samba Server?
2- From my network cable, switch etc. speed/problem?
3- From Proxmox network adapter?

But I check everything is good in Proxmox summary screen all is fine.

Can you advice me about controling of this speed problem with Samba?

Regards,
Mucip:)

So we need a bit (a lot) more information from you.

  • VMconfig qm config <vmid>, is it an container then pct config <vmid>
  • The current speed at which files are copied.
  • What do you test with IPERF3 between two machines
  • Have you tested an other protocol like NFS?
  • Your networkspeed, how is the VM connected with physical network interface?
  • Networkspeed of your client that transfer files from and to the samba server
  • What speed should be achieved?
  • Your Proxmox network configuration cat /etc/network/interfaces
  • Debianversion where is Samba running now
  • Storagetype and Array Setup in Proxmox (how many drives, Raidlevel?...)

About speed: I copied 354 MB folder from samba to Windows in 18 seconds.

First time I heard IPERF3. I think I need to install IPERF3 on windows client, do I?
******
I have Debian Linux Samba server and using Windows clients only. I can not test speed on NFS unfortunatelly. I don't have Linux client.

The Lenovo server which is installed Proxmox has 10 G fiber ethernet. Ofcourse I have many switches, hubs on the network. Speed may be slow because of network hardware?

I need more speed. Because I know we have 10 G ethernet must be more faster?

Proxmox installen on M2 NVE . And Debian and windows guests installed on Server 4xSSD discs. 2 disc are RAID 0 and RAID 1 to each 2 discs.

In my opinion it shoul be more and more faster with this hardware?!...

Hi,
May poor performance be because of my Proxmox config?
Core? Ram? Disk? etc...

I have 16 core and 2 socket (ThinkSystem SR650 V2 Intel Xeon Silver 4314 16C 135W 2.4GHz Processor)
512 GB RAM
I have Debain as File server and Win2024 as SAP/MSSQL server.
What do you advice for quest configuration RAM and CPU?

VM Config looks good and the server have enough resources. Good :)

Yes, that is really very slow.

Yes, please test your network speed in advance.

This is also a possibility.
