I have seen numerous messages about boot problems with pfSense and FreeBSD, but none of the suggestions have helped.

I'm using Proxmox 3.2 with an Intel i3 4340 and ASRock Extreme6 Z87 board. I assign the pfSense ISO to the CDROM. Boot menu shows. I can go the loader prompt and mess around. Any "Boot pfSense" option results in a back slash in bottom right corner and the CPU going to 100% on single core and 50% on dual core.

I have tried IDE and SCSI drives and various CPU types: kvm64, qemu64, core2duo, etc. The result is always the same.

The x86 pfSense installer boots fine.

I had a similar issue installing FreeNAS which is FreeBSD based. I ended up trying different CPU virtualization types. Qemu64 ended up working for me, but FreeNAS that I am using is x86_64. Try qemu32 or host.
