Passing Partial Disks from Proxmox to TrueNAS?

I am a bit of a loss here and need someone to confirm if I need to get some sort of controller or if its possible to do what I am asking.

I have a E3C246D4U2-2T motherboard that has a total of 8 SATA ports. 2 of the SATA ports have SSDS in RAID1 for Proxmox + VMs. The remaining 6 have HDDs connected to them. I am trying to create a VM in proxmox for TrueNAS (to A. serve the purpose of a NAS and B. occasionally run some simulation or testing for a separate server that runs TrueNAS).

I have IOMMU working and redirect working. I know how to pass through things like GPUs to VMs, but I dont know how to pass through 6 of the 8 SATA ports (the ones utilizing the 6 HDDs) to a TrueNAS VM so I can have it manage them directly and use S.M.A.R.T.

As shown below I only have one SATA controller which holds all the disks. I dont want it taking the two SSDs that I am using in proxmox.

I am aware that https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Passthrough_Physical_Disk_to_Virtual_Machine_(VM) exists, but to my knowledge its not recommended because TrueNAS cannot manage the disks directly.

I did find this comment on reddit, https://www.reddit.com/r/Proxmox/co...=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button, but I dont have a strong knowledge enough to know if this is a proper passthrough or TrueNAS still wont be able to manage the disks directly?

Thanks!
