I am installing a new node with Hardware Raid1 totally 2.4 TB with 2 discs. Now I want to have 2 local partitions, 1 for my Proxmox backups 1,2TB and 1 partition 1,2TB for my VM’s. But I don’t understand how to partition this when I start a new installation. Can someone explain me what I have to fill in for: hdsize, maxroot, maxvz and min free?

Thanks!

You can find description of settings here: https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Installation
Under "Advanced LVM Configuration Options"

If your usable size is 2.4TB and you want to use half for each of backups and VMs, then where do you plan to place PVE installation itself? Do you have another disk to be used for root? If you do, then just install PVE and then partition/configure the R1 after the installation.

And backups on the same array as the guests makes no sense, except you also sync them to some other hosts.
Because when your array fails you will lose your guests and the backups of your guests at the same time.
Might sound really obvious, but I've read some threads here, where people lost everything because they stored their only backups on the same disk as the guests.

Those 2 discs are spinning discs, I also have 6x SSD (1TB) in this node but I want to use these for CEPH. But maybe I need to use 1 for the OS.

Yes the controller can create volumes.
