Hi to all

I have 2 questions for somebody that can help me:

1- Is possible install drivers for Debian without problems in a PVE that was installed since his ISO file?
2- I have heard that there are commercial vendors of antivirus that offer antivirus for Debian in order to protect VMs that this have, this system analyzes the communications network to discover the viruses and protect VMs, and obviously there will be less consumption of resources in general due to that no will be necessary to install an antivirus in each VM. But like PVE has no a Kernel equal to Debian, I wonder if this system will work.

The kernel of PVE supports by default pretty much different drivers, so there's a high chance, that your hardware will be supported. Else you've to compile the PVE kernel yourself (Maybe there's also a other way like making a kernel module. Sadly I don't know.)

Yes, such antivirus scanning is possible e.g. with a Firewall. I've such a setup, but sadly such nice features are only available with paid subscriptions - because it isn't really cheap, I'm not using it yet. You just need to setup your infrastructure correctly.

What do you mean with "But like PVE has no a Kernel equal to Debian"?? The Proxmox ISO and wiki sites are based on Debian Wheezy with just their own kernel and a pre-installed Proxmox environment. There's no reason why it shouldn't work.

Thanks Patschi for your answer, but i am doing the questions based on "packages-xxx.deb", or "packages-xxx-all.deb", and as i know that PVE is based in RHEL Kernel, i have these doubts.
Also for the comerical antivirus i have the same doubt for his instalation, if the packages are files ".deb", can i use it for his instalation without problems?.

Best regards
Cesar

The PVE kernel is based on the OpenVZ kernel, which is based on RHEL kernel, which is based on Linux. And this kernel is being used by the most distributions like Debian and Ubuntu. Only because PVE kernel is based on OpenVZ, it doesn't mean that the Proxmox team isn't updating the drivers of the kernel or adding new one.

PVE is based on Debian Wheezy, so ofcourse installing .deb packages works.

I don't unterstand what do you exactly mean with "commerical antivirus"? What do you understand under this topic? I don't think that you may find a good antivirus which you just install with one .deb file and network scanning for threats works immediality for all virtual machines. (At least I never heard about that)

I did want to say "commercial antivirus" - in a meeting i had long time ago, i heard about of this commercial product that have packages for debian.

Also, many times, i see that PVE don't have the latest drivers, that i see it in others repositories for Debian, on the other hand, some server manufacturers offers support for Debian (as HP) and offers download his drivers in his latest versions (I don't see it in PVE)

Best regards
Cesar
