Hey guys,
i'm facing a new issue or misunderstanding maybe someone has an idea whats going wrong.

I have multiple scheduled backups.
First backup of 4 VMs and CTs is every sunday and should be stored for the last 10 backups.

Second backup of the same 4 VMs and CTs (different backup job) is every day and should be stored for the last 7 Days.

All Backups are stored in the same backup storage.

The Problem is now, that the First backup is overrun by the second and all VMs and containers are removed by the second backup job, there is no backup left older than 7 days. (WHY)
It makes sense that proxmox solution to store and remove backups is the filename and date time stamp, but it should be stored in a database (or file) and be removed if the same backup job trys to remove the files and not another one.

Is this a bug or a misunderstanding from me?

First thing - similar backups of the same VMs/LXCs will all be subject to ANY retention policy you set.

Secondly - You appear to have setup 2 separate backup jobs - that in fact do the "same job".

What you appear to "really" want is a single daily backup job of all VMs/LXCs - but with a weekly retention of 10 & a daily retention of 7.
That way you will have all of the last 7 days of daily backup & 1 weekly backup for the last 10 weeks.

Proxmox has a really neat simulator here. It is for PBS but that works the same for in-house Proxmox backups.
So if you set that simulator to keep-daily: 7 & keep-weekly: 10 , you will see that over a larger time period (try 15 weeks) you will end up with a total of 10 weekly backups & 7 most-recent daily backups - 17 in total.

Hope this helps you.

That makes sense. Thats realy clever, and thank you very much for the link and the detailed explanation.
Problem are two jobs of the same type for the same machines. One job is all i need and than setting the daily and weekly Backups.
Realy nice.
