Hi,

I have a query regarding which OS should I select for virtual container.

Proxmox support help me out here if I want to use Ubuntu LTS version. and If it is possible then how to proceed to create the virtual container.

Also which is the stable OS to use on OpenVZ?
Ubuntu LTS
CentOS
Opensuse

Thanks in Advance
Sandesh

Hi Sandesh,

You can use almost any Linux OS distro you want under OpenVZ even beyond those Proxmox provides as a downloadable template within the interface. You can download other distro templates from http://wiki.openvz.org/Download/template/precreated which also includes Ubuntu 8.04. Just remember that you will need to adjust the template name to fall under the new Proxmox naming convention which can be found here http://www.proxmox.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2390

I've installed all the OSes in the OpenVZ template repository and they all work fine and are stable. My personal preferences are Ubuntu, Debian and CentOS for both stability and performance.

I would go for Debian Lenny, if you need a rpm based Distro go for Centos.

Thanks bleau69 for the reply.

I am checking this because I need to do comparative analysis for choosing OS for JAVA Application server. So if you have any thread which does this earlier then please share with me for reference.
The proxmox having debian as Core OS, I like to use Ubantu LTS version ( not a standard server distribution ) template for virtual container, but the list of container not having ubuntu LTS version.
NOTE:- LTS version have more support than Standard server distribution.

Thanks Tom,

Any specific reasons and Advantages to go with Debian Lenny?

I'd check this forum as well as the OpenVZ forum before even selecting an OpenVZ template. I say this because under OpenVZ, you will need to set the Java maximum heap sizes else they may not run as expected.

This is a post regarding one user's Java setup under OpenVZ which I think it may give you an overview of what you may need to be concerned with when running Java - http://forum.openvz.org/index.php?t=msg&goto=7057

If this is something you already know about then great. I still like Ubuntu (including LTS) for the best overall performance, but I don't work with Java much.

Do you have a link where I can download the template for Ubuntu LTS version?
Or any link which help me to create template for this?

our Ubuntu template is based on LTS.
http://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Ubuntu_Hardy_Standard

you can find also a 64-bit version,
see ftp://download.proxmox.com/appliances/system/

the only issue I know is a live migration problem. (this does not exists on any other openvz template on Proxmox VE, its an init logger issue).

I use Ubuntu or Centos only when the application I will run needs Ubuntu. in all other cases I go for Debian.

NOTE:- LTS version have more support than Standard server distribution.

If you really want a specific OS including a kernel you need to use KVM and install from CD.

OpenVZ does not use a kernel inside the guest.

Note: Ubuntu LTS == kernel 2.6.24 + a set of packages.

Hey Tom, Thanks for the link, I will test it out today, For initit logger I think I have a solution, so I will try it out.

Dietmar :- Yes I agree, but there are also other factors affecting to choose the template, like support for updates, etc.

I can give a try to Ubuntu LTS version and check the performance.

If you guys have any comparative analysis on OS selection then please share so It will help me to take decision quickly.

Thanks and Regards,
Sandesh
