optimise windows server for backup

I have a windows 2012 running exchange 2013 on.
I HHD is 100GB
Now it used to be 60GB but I increased it as was running out of space.
I did some maintenance and now free space is 59GB ( that had dropped to 10GB before the maintanace)
The backup time and amont of data though is still the same :-(
about 3 hours for about 40GB of data.
What I cant understand is when the drive was 90Gb full of data ie logs files, it was taking the same amount of time and data to backup ie about 3 hours and 40GB data. Now that I have deletedthose logs and freed to much space why the backup does not go down in amount of data being backed up and time.

VM hdd is qcow2 and virtio.

Is there a way to optimise that please?

To clean up free space outside of the VM, you need to write zeros or use trimming (supported storage required) and then compact your qcow2. This is possible, but a manual task which involves some steps. Afterwards the VM will be backuped much faster, because a lot of real empty space, which is very compressible.
