EDIT:

Vodafone UK FTTP (openreach) - just learnt that VLAN-ID is not used if connecting to the ONT RJ45. Without the appended VLAN-ID on the interface everything is working perfectly.

The mistake I was making was in OpenWRT (nothign to do with PVE). In OpenWRT when creating teh new WAN PPPoE interface I was creating 'eth1.101' where instead I should have just been using 'eth1'

======================================================================================================================

Openwrt 23.05.3 installed as VM in PVE8.2 as my main router.

Today I switched from virginmedia broadband to Vodafone fibre with ONT installed in premises

Proxmox network interfaces:
  • enp3s0 + enp4s0 + enp5s0 bridged ports added to vmbr0 for LAN, showing up in openwrt as eth0 LAN
  • enp6s0 added to vmbr1 for WAN, showing up in OpenWRT as eth1 WAN.

With virgin mediahub in modem mode connected to OpenWRT eth1 (vmbr1/enp6s0) everything is working absolutely as intended. WAN/LAN all traffic moves correctly.

Just today switched to vodafone fibre, have ONT installed in house. Want to connect Openwrt box direct to ONT wihtout using iSP router.

Have acquired PAP/CHAP username and password from Vodafone and VLAN ID of 101.

In openwrt removed old WAN interface, added new interface type PPPoE, used username and password as supplied but I keep getting the following message:

Code:
Unknown error (USER REQUEST)
then it changes to
Code:
connection attempt failed
a few seconds later

I cant see why its not working.
I would really appreciate any help or guidance.

In PVE > OPenWRT VM > Hardware > network device(net1) > vmbr1 (for wan as opposed to (net0)vmbr0 for lan) Ive tried with and without VLAN ID 101.

In PVE > Network > vmbr1 (where I assign the port enp6s0 as bridged port on this linux bridge) I've checked and unchecked VLAN aware.

But no luck with any combination of settings.
