OpenVZ P2V migration from Fedora Core 3 box?

I just started playing with PVE and am about to attempt a test P2V migration from a Fedora Core 3 physical box to an OpenVZ container using the method described here:

http://wiki.openvz.org/Physical_to_container

Since there is no FC3 template, I'm going to try using the CentOS 4 template. The reason I'm looking at that template is because RHEL 4 (and thus CentOS 4) was based on FC3, and so I'm hoping this template would be compatible with FC3. If I have any success with this method, I'll report back, but I have a feeling there may be a better way...

If anyone has any input on a better way to go about virtualizing a FC3 box, I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks! :)

I highly recommend you move your services to a current Linux.

If this is not possible, the easiest move is just a P2V to a KVM guest on Proxmox VE using the clonezilla method.

Thanks for the advice, Tom. And yes, the point of this exercise is to get this box current. Moving to an OpenVZ environment will just make those upgrades safer because it's so easy to clone the container and be able to roll back in the event of trouble (not so easy to do on a physical machine).

The reason I was looking at OpenVZ first was because it is my understanding that it's performance is fairly close to bare metal. Also, the clonezilla method looks like it would have required some pretty significant down time.

Anyhow, I'm happy to report that the migration went without a hitch. It should be much easier and safer to get the box current from here.

Thanks,

Curtis
