Where did you get the image? Looks like the suboptimal image I used last week. I had a similar problem and I fixed it using sysvinit (IIRC). Could you please add the output of dpkg --get-selections from inside the vm?

BTW: You also need to generate a edcsa key (error message while starting ssh)

I downloaded the image from: https://openvz.org/Download/template/precreated

You only have to install sysvinit inside your VM and try if it the login prompt is working now.

Do this:

HOST> vzctl enter <id of your VM>
VM > apt-get install sysvinit
VM > reboot

I see the problem now .... the precreated image is configured with upstart instead of sysvinit and the creators of the OpenVZ container set the package sysvinit as priority -1, such that it cannot be installed (set in /etc/apt/preferences.d/parallels).

So, you need to change the same thing as if this would be Ubuntu. Copy the whole text and paste it directly inside the command prompt of the VM:

cat > /etc/init/tty1.conf <<EOF
# tty1 - getty
#
# This service maintains a getty on tty1 from the point the system is
# started until it is shut down again.

start on stopped rc RUNLEVEL=[2345]

stop on runlevel [!2345]

respawn
exec /sbin/getty --noclear -8 38400 tty1
EOF

This yields the desired command prompt and you can login via VNC into the VM.

Thank you. Solved my problem :D
