Old standalone PMG - how to shift to a modern cluster

Hi ,

I've got a PMG v 6.4.4 mail gateway that I'd like to shift into a cluster and bring up to date.
Whats my best way forward? the current host is fairly complex with over 100 domains, custom rules & SPAM scores.
 
While testing upgrades across multiple major versions is nothing we test too extensively - I would expect that creating a backup (via GUI), installing a fresh PMG (on a different machine) and restoring the backup should work and probably be the most painless way. Aftterwards setup another node and freshly join it to the cluster.

Keep in mind that transient information (mails in quarantine, syslogs (tracking center)) will be lost.
