I have been working with VMware forever (2003) and wanted to try out proxmox. Boy, I was in for a surprise because nothing works as a true hypervisor should work. Or I might be doing something wrong. In all the years I have worked with virtual environments, that this is the only hypervisor, that if I make a change on one VM it can and will affect all my other VM's and make me hard power my entire node. (Yes, the pcie passthrough or issue) It kills everything. So, the PCIe passthrough is still very experimental, imo. I wasn't even trying a GPU but a TV PCIe adapter passthrough.

Another issue I have is the steps or lack of steps to actually import an OVA, OVF, vmdk, vdi or anything that have been around for years? So what , if at all, can proxmox import? From what I am researching, it's still all command line and very limited and experimental as well. Yes, VMWare is the same but rarely have issues.

So, I ended up purchasing a USB tuner because I can't rely on the PCIe passthrough feature? So, the USB passthrough feature works or at least it has been. The other issue I am still working with is importing to proxmox. I am glad at this point I don't manage a proxmox farm. I am now faced with, do I want to rebuild all my Vm's or look for a different product or go back to VMWare. At this point VMWare sounds very easy and I know it works.

I really want to like the product but not being able to even natively import a vmdk has me really baffled at the moment. Even vbox has this ability. Please oh wise one's, help me like and understand this product.

PCI passthrough in general works fine. If it doesn't work its most of the time a problem with the hardware and not the software. For example a mainboard that got a BIOS with a bad IOMMU group layout or a PCIe card that wasn't designed with passthrough in mind, like the radeon GPUs with the reset bug, where the GPUs firmware doesn't like to be initialized and removed more than once without a hardreset.
If you only use server mainboards and enterprise grade cards that are specifically designed for virtualization with passthrough you should run into very few problems.
But yes, enabling PCI passthrough really isn't noob friendly with all the CLI stuff that is required to enable it.
