non-free firmware

I am trying to install Proxmox VE 2.1 using the ISO burned to a CD. The installation does not successfully configure and use the NIC. So, I tried to install Debian Squeeze but had the same result. Then I learned that Debian now does not automatically include non-free firmware in their Squeeze release. So now I have installed Debian Squeeze WITH the non-free firmware net-inst CD which is available from the Debian website. Now the NIC works. I found the Proxmox VE installation instructions for installing on a Squeeze box but am not having success following them. So, what is the better way to proceed? Should I install from the Proxmox VE 2.1 ISO CD and then somehow manually configure the NIC or should I keep trying to install Proxmox VE 2.1 on Squeeze and somehow get that working. The Asus mainboard NIC uses RealTek which apparently uses non-free firmware. Thank you for any help. Fido, woof woof.
 
Install PVE from CD and fix the issue. The pve-firmware package (installed by default) should include all necessary firmware, so there is no need to install something else. Maybe you need to update to latest versions after install to get it work.

Thank you for your response. However, the pve-firmware package (installed by default) appears not to have installed support for a RealTek NIC which requires the non-free firmware. When I install PVE 2.1 from CD the NIC does not work. Since the NIC is not working after the install, I cannot update to latest versions.
I downloaded PVE 1.8 CD and successfully installed that with no problems. The NIC works well and automatically in PVE 1.8. But not the PVE 2.1 CD. Non-free NIC firmware support seems not included. Remember, Debian included non-free firmware in Lenny but not in Squeeze. So now I am trying to learn how to get the NIC working after installing PVE from CD. Thanks, more.

What file is missing exactly?
