No Welcome to Proxmox VE Console

Hi,

I just installed Proxmox 6.1 (using the latest ISO) and configured the boot drive as a ZFS raid0 of one drive. The installation is successful and I get a black screen with some white text in the middle with the kernel version. In a few seconds the pc will continue to boot and the screen turns black. There is no welcome to Proxmox VE message or login prompt. I can still access the proxmox host from another machine via ssh or the webgui. It is only the login screen that is black. I have since updated the kernel to 5.4, added the pvetest repository and setup a few VMs. All without any issues. The only thing missing is the welcome console. How do I get it to show?

Here are the proxmox packages:

Thank you

I was looking for the welcome banner that specified the ip to connect to and then a login prompt that would allow me to administer the host locally and not from a remote machine. All I get is black screen.

My hardware is as follows:

CPU: AMD Threadripper 3960X
MOBO: Gigabyte TRX40 Aorus Master
GPU: Sapphire Nitro+ 5700XT (passed through to Mac OS VM)
Gigabyte GT 1030 Low Profile (for Proxmox host)
Memory: 4x16GB G-Skill Ripjaws V 3600MHz DDR4
Storage: 120GB SATA SSD (Proxmox OS formatted as ZFS Raid0)
480GB SATA SSD and 512GB SATA SSD (ZFS Raid0 for VMs)
1TB Sabrent Rocket PCIE 4.0 NVME (passed through to Mac OS VM)
2x1TB WD Black SN750 PCIE 3.0 NVME (Passed through to various Proxmox VMs)

Also the only tty process running is:

root 3794 0.0 0.0 5608 1668 tty1 Ss+ 13:56 0:00 /sbin/agetty -o -p -- \u --noclear tty1 linux

Thanks for your help

Yes there is a Gigabyte GT 1030 dedicated to the host

Sorry, saw that on the second look.

So you see the boot loader menu on that GPU but no login prompt? One thing I can think of is that the kernel is changing the graphics mode when it starts and the card doesn't believe in that mode or the kernel isn't using the right driver. You could try adding "nomodeset" to the end of the kernel command line and see if that helps.

You would do that from the grub prompt, if you're using grub to boot (usually you get a blue box where you can select a kernel or hit "e" to edit the command line). If you're using ZFS on the root filesystem you'll be using systemd to boot and I think that is similar but haven't used it personally.

Thanks @BobhWasatch. You led me to the root of the problem. It seems that my motherboard, even though it gives me the option to chose the PCIe slot to use for the primary GPU (and in my case I did chose the GT 1030) it will switch midway through boot to the 5700XT regardless of that setting. Since the 5700 XT is passed through and its drivers are blacklisted, I get no output. Removing the 5700XT forces the boot to continue on the GT 1030 and I do get a console.

I have to follow this up with Gigabyte because this to me looks like a bug in BIOS.

Again thanks for your help.
