Hi, Another noob to proxmox here but I really want to learn.

I have managed to set up open media vault in a vm and attached my storage as usb mount through the gui. I then created a Plex vm and added my smb storage from omv to the Plex vm. Everything was working beautifully and I was so pleased with myself until I rebooted.

The system can not find the usb mounts and will not let me access the gui. I still have ssh access but have googled for a day and can’t find a solution. Is the server completely hosed or can I selvage my work through ssh?

Im really hoping there is someone that can save me a reinstall as at this point its the only way I can see to resolve my issue.

I think I know my mistake. After I add the drives as usb mount in the gui I think I need to add them to my fstab to make them persist on reboot. I thought that would happen automatically if done through the gui.

If anyone can point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it.

many thanks

Hi,

How exactly did you add the storagte to your PVE? If you format it (as, say, a directory for example) through the GUI (Node -> Disks -> Directory), then PVE should automatically generate mount units for that storage. If you just add it as a normal directory (DC -> Storage -> Add Directory), then you'll have to do the automatic mounting yourself, through fstab for example.

Have you tried manually mounting the storage through SSH before accessing the web interface again?

As for the GUI not being usable: this is a known issue, and there's an open report [1] in the bug tracker for it. You can add yourself to the CC list if you want to keep up to date with that ;).

Is the webUI not working because you can't login or you get timeouts (like described in https://bugzilla.proxmox.com/show_bug.cgi?id=3714, where you could fix it by disabling the storage using SSH with the pvesm set --disabled 1 YourStroage command) or isn't the PVE server booting at all, because it is looking for the USB disk but can't find it (because for example the name changed from sdc to sdb or something like that)?

Hi, Thank you for your repy.

I added the storage to my omv vm using the drop down menu in the gui for usb storage.

I will try to add the storage manually through ssh and hopefully the gui will come back. By adding manually, do you mean in fstab?

Thanks again for you advise.

Hi, Thank you for you reply.

It boots and my plex vm is working, I have ssh access also.

I will try to add the storage manually to my fstab and if that doesn’t work I will take your advice and try to disable it.

many thanks

There is no GUI to add USB storages. Do you mean USB passthrough? Because USB passthrough wouldn't be great to bring USB disks into VM, as USB passthrough is fully emulated, resulting in bad throughput and high latency. In such a case I would use disk passthrough to bring the USB disk into the VM:
https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Passthrough_Physical_Disk_to_Virtual_Machine_(VM)

Also keep in mind that you can't mount the USB disk on the PVE host as well as a VM or not in two VMs. Trying this would result in corrupted data.
Only thing where the disk should be mounted is your OMV VM. Everything else should access it through SMB/NFS.

That’s correct. I add to omv my usb drives passthrough from the gui. I then added the omv smb share to my plex vm.

I think I have done exactly as you have said but after reboot, no gui.

Thanks again for your help.

I now have access to the gui. I added the drives via the shell to the vm and everything is now beautiful again.

Proxmox is fantastic with a great community and I’m looking forward to learning what else I can do with it.

Thanks again to Dunuin and Nunner for you help.
