Newly installed 9.1.1 built in shell showing odd characters using safari but not Firefox?

I can't seem to find any mention of this online so excuse me if I'm querying this incorrectly. Any known solution?

in the past, such things happened in other browsers (e.g. firefox) when there was 'fingprinting resisting' enabled, so that a website couldn't fingerprint a user with e.g. drawing characters on a canvas (which is exactly what happens in xtermjs). do you see any errors in the browsers console? is there any such setting in firefox?
