Hi,
as good practice dictates, I have disabled the root account and created a, what I thought, a close to identical copy of it. All I need works fine except it will only show me available updates in the GUI, not letting that user apply them. What may I have missed? I can upgrade through ssh, but would be great to also understand why it is not working in the gui... I have read the docs to create this user correctly and apply permissions, but something is still missing apparently. Thoughts anyone? Thanks

Think of Proxmox as a Hypervisor Appliance, not a general Linux server. Proxmox is either installed from vendor suppled ISO or takes over basic Debian installation to create such an appliance. There are many dependencies and requirements for root user in PVE and it cannot be disabled.

Plug this into google "proxmox disable root" and review the multitude of threads dedicated to this topic.

Ok. thanks for the explanation. Just wish there were a way of logging in as non-root, then elevate if/when necessary, but get it. I'll have to re-think this then :) Thanks
