hello

we are trying to move away from Broadcom and since we are a mixed shop (windows and linxu) i wanted to try ou proxmox, since i have heard good things about you guys.

is there any through documentation on architecture, configuration and best practise? i want to start by evaluating the whole proxmox environemnt starting from building the environment from scratch.

if i was to test it, is it better to user a VM or is it easier for me to grasp if i user a spare bare metal server?

any help is appreciated, TIA.

The wiki is a good place to start: https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Main_Page

Coming from vmware myself just recently, I did it on a spare server I had hanging about, but I've also tried it on VM's and that works fine too.

What helped me the both of all though are the training-sessions, https://www.proxmox.com/en/services/training
I personally did one in-person and the full 4-day combo-course, but there are also online ones available, as well in some different languages. Of course the training isn't free, but after messing about it a bit yourself the training helps a lot.

That you have Linux experience is a good plus btw, since while a lot of it can be done in the GUI, some things must / are easier / are better if done though the Shell, but even without Linux experience enough can be done in GUI and there are always these forums for help with doing things that can't be done through that.

Also as you're coming from VMWare, a quick tip already: Think in odd numbers, so 1, 3 or 5 servers in a cluster, not 2 or 4. If you do have to use an even-numbered cluster, take a look at what Q-Devices are/do: https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Cluster_Manager#_corosync_external_vote_support
Unlike VMWare there is no "master" node, like VCenter, all the nodes are equal and you need more then half talking to eachother to perform actions (that is why even clusters don't always work, because then you have half which is not more then half)
