Hello,

I'm new to PBS and I have a beginner question: What is the best way to configure the HDD's? I have 3 HDD's and I'd like to configure them in Raidz-1. I have read, that some users install the system itself on a seperate disk and only the backups on the Raidz. But, when I have system and data in RAIDZ and 1 disk is not working anymore I can change the HDD without losing data. When I install system on a different disk and that get broken I have no backup of the system. Is my thinking correct?

It always comes down to what you have or can buy and to find the best compromise :)

If you don't want to or can buy more drives, then yes, a raidz1 for the system and the datastore will be the best way. If you can spend more on disks, then having 2 smaller disks for the system can help to split up failure domains.
