Hi,

first of all, congratulations for this very great Developement.

i've some problems and some questions of using proxmox and KVM.

The first is the correct network Interface to emulate in an KVM Machine.
Is it for speed unimportant which one i choose, is it only for Compatibility?

The next one is the Bridging, my mainboard has 4 NIC's, and at the moment there is only one (eth0/vmbr0) configured with IP 192.168.100.10.

So now i would use one Network card in the KVM Machine, i have chosen the right Network Model and vmbr0 to connect the Machine to the network.
Everything works fine, but the speed is "very low" i only gut 17MB/s at the maximum for transfer from KVM machine to my Mac or Windows PC.

In the KVM Machine runs freenas.
In freenas i'm able to check the speed of the Hard Disk Transfer Rate.
the speed from freenas to the IDE Device is fast enough and i got round about 200 MB/s from the HDD.
But the bottle Neck is the Network Card/ or Configuration.
Can Someone help to improve better speed?
It's also okay when i can bound one of the physical NIC's to the KVM Machine, but how does it work?

Perhaps i have to work with NAT? is it better for more speed?

It would be nice if someone could help or post a link to some other hints, Articles.

Thanks.

just to mention, it makes no sense to run freenas in a KVM environment if you need speed, but you will have a reason (hopefully).

what network card do you emulate for your freenas VM? if you use the default rtl try e1000, known as the fastest emulated card. (i assume virtio is not supported on freenas, virtio is paravirtualized network which should give the best speed).

hmm, i think it would be e good idea to use proxmox for home use.
so i would like to have one machine (NAS) for serving files for the internal servers and also my different clients.
i would like to use freenas, cause its possible to use AFP and SMB, cause i've macs and windows clients mixed.

so one machine on the proxmox i will install asterisk and on one other i would like to use an windows machine.

if you run virtualized NAS you will loose some performance, so if you need full speed don´t do it or accept some limitations.

again my question: what network card do you emulate for your KVM freenas and how do you test/compare it?

i chose the e1000 from the beginning of installing the Freenas.

and i use the graph of Freenas for the speed test.
On the Mac i use MenuMeters for measuring
