Good Day All

So am am starting from the ground up and i have been getting alot of info so thanks to all who ahs helped me. I just need some advice please.

I have an DL 360 G7 2x Xeon & 192 GB RAM

I will be getting an SAS Controller Card so i can use ZFS in Proxmox as most people are using.

BUT now this is where i am a bit lost. I have seen some people use unraid and then Proxmox and VM's or Dockers etc.....

Also there is TrueNas and Synology (With RedPill)

So am I am really lost here and now sure what to do. Any advice or help on this.

It is going to be an Media Server & will be hosting VM;s for Windows 10/11 via an KVM or ThinClient.

I also want to maybe install pfsense and a few other things,

Thanks in advanced.

If you wish to run TrueNas then you will probably be looking at passing through the SAS Controller and Drives to the TrueNAS VM. This means your bulk storage is then not directly available to promox and your other VM's / Containers. There are other ways of running TrueNAS under proxmox but they are a compromise and not generally recommended.

Alternatively you could install Samba (either directly on the proxmox host or on a container or a VM) to provide file and media sharing. Personally, that's what I would recommend.

Thanks but i take it that i will Install Proxmox first and then on top of that install my NAS Solution and pass all the disks to the NAS VM for Media and the ones i want to use for VM's or Containers then use Proxmox ZFS for ?

Yes but keep in mind that PCI passthrough is passing through the whole HBA. So if you buy a 8 port HBA and passthough that HBA into the VM, all disks connected to all those 8 ports aren't available to the PVE host anymore. So all disks that PVE should use (PVE system disks and VM/LXC storage etc) should be connected to another disk controller, like the onboard SATA ports. So might be problematic when using a backplane that won't allow you mix controllers.

So Question here is that I should install Proxmox and not unraid as the Host OS. (Just want to make sure here as i have seen a few different setups)

Use 1 Controller with PCI Passthough to the TrueNas or Synology (What is better to use)

Use 2nd Controller for the Proxmox Host for the VM's i plan to use.

Sorry if some of this is an Stupid Q just want to set this all up right the first time.

Thanks

Really depends on your needs.
If you want PVE as your hypervisor, run PVE bare metal and virtualize Unraid/TrueNAS/synology. If you are fine with what Unraid/TrueNAS offers as a hypervisor, skip PVE entirely and just use a bare metal Unraid/TrueNAS.

What NAS OS to use also depends on your needs. I prefer TrueNAS because it offers a lot of enterprise features, uses ZFS and is quite complex. Other people hate it because of that as they just want something simple they don't have to care about that will just run without needing to learn new stuff. For such people, an OMV or something similar might be a better choice.

Thanks @Dunuin

Now i am so lost i do not know where to start :)

Right now i have an PC setup with Synology and using RAID 5.

I want to move to my server so i can move my NAS, Windows Machines and start to play with some Dockers etc....

So the Disks i need to make sure are passed though as per my needs. So now comes the Question do i use ZFS In Proxmox or do i do this via TrueNas if i decide to use it or just stick to what i know and pass though the Disks to Synoogy and use RAID 5.

I do not mind learning new stuff but i want to make sure i do this right the first time.

Thanks again

Are you planning to re-use your existing HDD (from Synology) in Proxmox? If yes, then you will need to virtualise Synology on proxmox and pass through the disks if you want to retain your existing data without doing a backup and restore operation

Thanks @bobmc This is the thing. I do not know where i should start i do not mind starting all over with all of this as i have so many PC's setup for different things.

I just want to move to 1 Platform and setup what i need on the Platform. If there are Recommendations then will go with that if it is do as you wish then so be it. I just do not want to spend hours of my time setting up something new and then have to start all over.

Thanks.
