Hey guys,

I've recently started using proxmox ve at home and am entirely in love with it.

Currently i'm running it on a scrounged together heap of parts (old intel i5 hp probook 635 with 8+16gb, mix of external ssd's/hdd's and various hubs and dongles).

So far I've managed:
Lxc's:
-Nginx web server
-3 minecraft server

Vm's:
-Pfsense replacing my isp's modem/router combo giving me way more control and also taking care of dyndns and openvpn, i absolutely love this!
-various windows/linux vm's

I'm also currently in year one of a 2 year night class for windows system administrator, they demand a pretty hefty laptop (8core/16thread, 32gb ram) for virtualisation.

Currently that means dragging my asus Rog G17 behemoth to school. This also means my wife can't play wow on my school nights :)

What I would like to do is carry something lighter like a 14" elitebook 845 g7/g8 to school with me holding a ryzen 5 and 16gigs so there's still some horsepower on tap if need be, and additionally use openvpn to work remotely on a dedicated (headless) proxmox machine.

Additionally i want to add a gpu to the mix so i can do some gaming on the elitebook (wow with the wifey.)

I've done a proof of concept VM where i passed through the Intel Igpu on a 4core 8gb win10 Vm and played wow at lowest setting using Parsec at 1920x1200. Playing on a good wifi6 connection it was definitely playable but the intel hd620 gfx left some eyecandy to be desired :)

Here's my actual question:

I could save costs by going for a ryzen 5000 series B450/B550 motherboard build but would preffer buying into am5 for the upgrade path down the road. (Ryzen 5000 being end of the road for am4)

How is proxmox doing compatibility wise with 5000 vs 7000 series ryzen?

Further what GPU would be easiest to work with?

Bang for buck an rtx2060 is priced pretty well atm compared to the rtx3050. But which gpu brand/series works best with proxmox? Nvidia has the benefit of supporting moonlight for game streaming ofcourse...

My build idea:

Ryzen 7 5700x/7700x
B450/550/650 atx board with support for at least 2 gpu's
2x32gb
Gpu: tbd but rtx2060 is a likely suspect
Extra pci-e network card for pfsense

Drives:
(i already own all of these)
1tb nvme for vm disks
1tb hdd for backups
240gb sata ssd for proxmox local drive and iso's
Can be expanded with an extra hdd, m.2 ssd down the line.

Thanks in advance for your insights ;)

If you want passthrough of more than the first x16 PCIe slot (and first M.2 slot), you need X370, X470 or X570 instead of B450 or B550. I don't know about the new 600-series, sorry.

EDIT: Try to find out the iOMMU groups of the motherboard (by searching the internet) before buying it.
