My PVE cluster is 6 hosts with AMD EPYC 24core CPUs and 1TB RAM each, running 9.1.4.
I want to function as a DR site for a client who runs vSphere. To this end I want to build a few large nested ESXi 8.0 VMs.
I've installed ESXi in a VM, and it boots fine as long as the attached RAM is less than about 100G. If I exceed 100G ESXi takes a long time to boot. It gets stuck on a black screen right after loading the initial files. If I go over 130G RAM it either hangs completely on boot or takes far longer than I'm prepared to wait.
I've found a few suggestions online including using UEFI and using a q35 machine type, but these don't seem to help.
Any thoughts from someone who has done this would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve
