hi all,

please somebody who has experience configuring sound for kvm xp guest, help me.

i have a soundcard in my "server" machine and i successfully installed the driver on the proxmox host using alsa.
i tested it playing an mp3 song and it worked without problems.

then i added this line to the vm config file:
args: -soundhw es1370
when i restarted the xp guest it successfully installed the new soundcard.

now the problem is that the vm can't play any sound: when i try to play sound the player "hangs" and no sound can be heard.
i tried also the other soundhw types without success.

please help, and please don't leave comments like "why are you trying to get sound on a server environment" - i simply need it, that's all :)

thank you
adam

This link suggests to make sure the underlying hardware supports the audio device and is capable of playing sound. As described in the opening post, this is the case and also the device is recognized and installed in the guest vm (Win XP).

I have the same issue. My server with the proxmox install can play sound well, i also made the args : soundhw ac97 in the config file of my Windows xp guest.
This sounddevice is recognized by the guest and drivers seem to be properly installed.

I know the VNC protocol does not support sound, but also via rdp i do not get any sound from the guest.

And yes i also know that proxmox is a server package, but at home i use linux on my desktops and the kids like to play their games via windows, so i installed xp as guest in proxmox, but games without sound are no fun.
