Hey guys I have a hp ml350p that id like to turn into a Proxmox lab
I have a few concerns about hardware, fan noise etc that I’d like to get to the bottom of before I commit to buying drives etc.
I have two, eight bay sff cages, the p420i controller and have ordered a H220 controller.
My initial thoughts are to kit out one cage with ssd,s adata look a good price and use the p420i in hardware raid 10 mode so 8x 256gb ssd’s in raid 10. I’d use this for Proxmox it’s live vm’s and containers.

Then for the second cage I would use the H220, to pass-through 8x 1.2tb sas drives, into a vm nas, maybe freenas, if problematic could always setup my own gui’less nas with a minimal centos os for example. Hoping to use Zfs if a sensible idea. Software raid, 5,6 or 10 depending on how fast I want the storage to be

This theoretical setup would leave me one spare cage slot in the server which I’m hoping I could If ever needed kit out with an extra H220 and 8 more sas drives like above if I ever need to space / speed on the nas vm.

My goal for the server would be mainly geared towards a small upcoming Vfx studio starting with one guy ‘myself’
I’ll be setting up vm’s to serve as, nas, project management, render farm management, communication,‘Mattermost/ rocket chat, a git repo manager things like this, I’d like flexibility and nothing software wise is set in stone.

it would be great in the future to be able to transition this setup to something super scalable/ enterprise / current in the distant future, but for now budget is tight and I’d like learn and discover any problems and get this working.

From reading online a few horror stories about fans spinning up to full speed when adding certain drives / hba’s etc,
The p420i being awful at hba pass through mode, ‘this is the reason I think it would only be sensible to use this as an intended hardware raid controller’
My only financially viable option at the present time is to have this server under my desk. Loud fans are unacceptable

Id like to get peoples thought on this if possible, is it possible? Is it not worth the hassle etc. Maybe it’s a good idea?
basically any flags / problems from experience, so I can avoiding ploughing money into this thing if it will end up being a disaster.
Thanks, look forward to hearing some feedback :)

Well, you will not get around the noise. That's hardware is intended for server rooms/cabinets, where noise is less a concern. And with the amount of hardware you want to put inside, you will need cooling.

In general, 2.5" drives are usually more expensive than 3.5". And you can buy bigger storage capacity with 3.5" with less slots. I suppose a spiced up gaming PC will perform better and probably more silent as well.

Hey thanks for the reply.. I think you may have misunderstood slightly, this is a super quiet server, runs pretty much whisper quiet. ‘Has the potential to be Verrrry loud’
My concerns are and I imagine this for a lot of hpe hardware that plugging certain hardware into these boxes not supported by hpe can cause the fans to ramp up into panic mode..
I realise a gaming pc home build could be an option but I think the rig itself minus hard drives would cost a small fortune in comparison to a second hand ml350p, A gaming rig also would require cooling and be know where near as well designed.

My Ml350p cost £180. Probably available even cheaper in the US that’s with no drives, one 12 core cpu and 32gb ram.
So I went ahead and installed 5 x 1.2tb 2.5” sas drives a h220 controller to start with and 1x512gb ssd .. reporting back super quiet still using 90watts power. Yet to test under load. But I couldn’t be happier so far.
I have opted out of FreeNAS after further reading and have created the zfs pool in Proxmox it’self and plan to use a centos vm for the shares nfs/smb passing the whole zfs array to the VM as it sounds a simpler more robust setup.
This setup so far is less than £500, all enterprise hardware. I’m curious to see how quiet this thing stays fully kitted out and maybe with a couple of gpu’s. Great to know peoples experiences

Also interested in any any experiences with 10gb nics? As this will probably be the next step, Maximising read speeds for images sequences / video files
