Migration from old to new cluster (4.4 to 8) - best strategy ?

Hi,
I've a cluster on PVE 4.4. This cluster contains ~50 CT.
I'll soon receive a new cluster on PVE 8.

I'm wondering what is the best strategy to migrate the CT from the old cluster to the new. Is the backup/restore the best strategy ? Does this work between 4.4 and 8 ? I don't know if the 8 will be able to restore *and* run the CT. I'll listen of all ideas and strategies

It's the easiest, no doubt, yet I don't know (never tested) if the direct path works.

Best to just try it. Setup a PVE 8 VM inside of your PVE 4 cluster and do a backup and restore there, then you'll know.

Hi,
depending on what is running inside the container, you might need to use legacy cgroupv1 mode for the Proxmox VE 8 nodes until you can upgrade the container itself: https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Upgrade_from_6.x_to_7.0#CGroupV2

If you go the backup/restore route, remember that if you want to use the unprivileged feature of LXC (default option on restore) and your CTs use systemd, you will need systemd version >=v220 in the containers.

What about VM (Windows servers) ? Will I have any compatibility issues with backup/restore process ?

I didn't had any issue with VM. The major issue I encoured was related to systemd on old containers (I had to update them before migration).
