Migrating from VMware...

Hello, all!

I have a customer with a slightly older VMware environment (5.5) that that are potentially looking to update/upgrade. Naturally, I was thinking that I'd just propose new VMware hypervisors, but I am now considering Proxmox. I see a Wiki article that outlines some potential ways to move VMs from ESXi (the docs use ESXi 6.7), but I wanted some of the community's advice on this. How well do these processes typically work? Is it still the same if I am using ESXi 5.5? I know about VirtIO drivers (I have a Datto appliance) but what else should I be concerned about? Can anyone chime in on their experiences with this kind of migration?

Also, how does Standard Support compare to Basic? What exactly is meant by "Remote support (via SSH)?"

Any guidance would be appreciated.

I cannot comment on any experience migrating from ESX 5.5 to PVE. Hopefully there will be other users who can.

The wiki pages [0] [1] which you already discovered also outline more generic ways to migrate to PVE which might work as well in your situation.

For detailed information check the subscription agreement [2]. It is not that long and written in normal English ;)

The remote support via SSH means that if necessary, we offer to log in, via SSH, to the customer's system in order to troubleshoot the problem at hand.

I hope this helps :)

Thanks for the info!

On a side note, regarding the subscription there is a line that reads "In a cluster each node needs a valid subscription. All nodes must have the same subscription level." Does that mean that you cannot create nodes without a subscription of some kind at all? And all new nodes added to that cluster need a subscription? Can you do replication and "live moves" without a cluster?

Proxmox VE comes with all the features enabled no matter if it has a valid subscription or not.

The subscription gives you access to the enterprise repository which contains the most tested updates. The packages go through the repositories like this: staging (Proxmox internal) -> testing -> no-subscription -> enterprise. While the Community subscription only gives you access to the enterprise repository, the higher subscription levels gets you access to our enterprise support where one of our devs will help you with your problem.

Now what that sentence
In a cluster each node needs a valid subscription. All nodes must have the same subscription level.
means is that in order to get support from us, all nodes in that cluster need to have the same subscription level. For example, if you have a three node cluster and want the Standard subscription level, all three nodes need a Standard subscription to be eligible to get support via our enterprise support portal.

I hope that answers any questions in that area :)

Now to the other question:
Can you do replication and "live moves" without a cluster?
No, these features are built upon a working cluster. You can check out the Admin Guide as well: https://pve.proxmox.com/pve-docs/pve-admin-guide.html#chapter_pvecm

For example, if you have a three node cluster and want the Standard subscription level, all three nodes need a Standard subscription to be eligible to get support via our enterprise support portal.

what if, let's say, I had two nodes with standard level and one node with basic level support. Could I still get basic level support for all nodes?

Yes, that would be the case.

Thank you for your time. I have really liked what I have seen of Proxmox, but I am still not sure if moving to Proxmox or keeping VMware is the best option. You've given me some great information and I will probably make a decision by the end of next week.

Thanks!
