[SOLVED] Migrating disks - to delete source or not?

Hi,

General knowledge question - when moving vm disks between storage, is there any value in keeping the source disk?

In my scenario I am migrating all of my disks to alternate storage due to an upcoming maintenance event at my facility. Once this maintenance is complete (generator work - power will be out in my pri server room for up to 5 days). I plan on upgrading my hosts in the pri server room and moving some of the vms back to these hosts. I will probably also move the disks for these vms back to the storage in the pri server room - does the "Move Storage" action do deltas or just the whole disk?

Thanks

There are a few reasons to keep the disks:
- you don't trust the migration process and want to have that last backup
- you want to do a test and then throw away any changes on new storage
- you want to re-use the old data in some way

None of the above is a common use, and frankly I had to really push on that square peg to fit into this round hole.

In your case, you can run into duplicate disk issue, orphan disks, over-occupied space, etc. You should remove the source disks.
