Hello all,

i use USB passthrough in many places and it always worked until now. What strangely does not work is to create a bootable Windows USB stick with the Mediacreationtool. The tool aborts every time (unknown error). The same happens when I pass a stick via Spice.

Does such a tool need any special settings?

You can just choose dvd / iso inside the media creation tool, why didnt you just do that?,
this will give you a clean iso file you can just upload to your proxmox storage "local" and then use to create vms.

USB passthrough does not work well for high bandwidth or low latency. I assume writing a bootable USB is just too much. I assume that it will work with PCIe passthrough of a whole USB controller, but that comes with its own set of caveats. Maybe USB/IP would work but that requires manual set-up.

I actually tried to use proxmox usb passthrough on an inject station for cameras in the past and from what i remember we had three options,
  1. Use device passthrough, didnt work at all
  2. Passing through the entire port, actually kinda worked, just make sure usb 3.0 box is checked, but still had occasional disconnects
  3. Getting a dedicated usb pcie card and passing that through, worked perfectly, so i would recommend you doing that if you do stuff like that frequently. They are also super cheap, like 15$ and you even get them for pcie x1

I don't need it for proxmox, only for a normal PC installation. ;)

Very good tip, that's what I'll do.

In the meantime, I created the stick manually. That works quite well.

Many (cheap) USB controllers don't reset properly or otherwise don't work well with PCI(e) passthrough. It might not be easy to find one unless you get the exact same make and model that has been reported to work with passthrough. Please search this forum and others for ones that are known to work.
