Max backups doubt

Currently I only have the 2 default Proxmox storages: "local" for backups, ISOs and other files, and "local-lvm" for the VMs themselves.

I notice that, if trying to backup a VM that already has a previous backup in the "local" storage, I get an error saying so, implying I'd need to delete previous backup first. So I take Proxmox is allowing only one backup per VM.

I checked in Datacenter -> Storage and "local" edit options and I noticed the Max backups field is default empty, even if it's marked as a "mandatory field".
How can this be if it's mandatory? Is Proxmox taking the empty field as max allowed backups per VM = 1 indeed?

Also, is there a way to make it automatically delete oldest backup files after max backup files has been reached?

Thanks.

For autodelete previous backups You need create backup schedules in Datacenter -> Backup.
For manual backups - manual delete only. :)

And max backups in storage settings apply to Backup schedules only.

So just by creating a backup schedule and setting max backups value in storage settings Proxmox will automatically delete old backups? I thought more special options were needed...

And for manual backups, is only one backup per VM allowed indeed? Can't it be changed?

Storage settings --> Backup schedules set the number of alowed backups per VM for this storage. That's it. No special limitation.
Have a look at the Documentation.

Documentation doesn't make clear whether only one backup per VM is allowed for the manual backups case, or if it can be changed...

@mir:
Like I previously mentioned:

Wth?

You can use from 0 --> XX. 0 = infinitely
So when you would use only manual, then you set it to "0".

Thanks. But as I mentioned, field is -by default- empty, with no value. Could empty field mean only 1 backup file per VM?
Also, if it's a mandatory field, how is Proxmox allowing it to be empty and working like above described?

Most people won't do a Backup to "local". The field is mantadory for newly defines Storages so I don't see a problem here.

i looked into this, and found out that there is no default "max backup" value for storages

but there is one for vzdump (which is 1) and this can be overwritten in /etc/vzdump.conf

so the order of values for this setting is:

value of storage, if not existing then value of /etc/vzdump.conf (maxfiles), if not existing then 1

Thanks very much mr dcsapak!!
Assuming the default value of 1 is the one /etc/vzdump.conf certainly assumes if it's not explicitly given a value, everything is clearer now. Thanks again.
