Mapping pci devices directly to vm-s

Hi,
Recently I came across an option to configure vm-s:

hostpci: [HOSTPCIDEVICE][,HOSTPCIDEVICE]*

This option however is marked as risky in the man pages.

Is anyone using this in production now? How it might be useful to map SR-IOV virtual network cards this way?
