Hi All,

quickly some background information.
We are currently looking into a solution for our support department. For support cases we get in, we need to create a VM or LXC with our software and customer specific configuration. The configuration is very often also outside of our software, for that reason we would like to create for every support case that need to be tested an own VM/LXC. To avoid that we starting always with installing Linux and our software, we would like to have different Templates that the support agent can select. Additional to that, our software also need physical ports, that mean every support agent who handle these type of cases, will get an own Server/PC next to him. This is also needed because sometimes the support agent need to do changes on the hypervisor and we don't want that all have full access to all settings of the hypervisor, if we would have one central server for all.

Is there a way or what is the best way to have a central storage of VM and LXC templates that can be accessed by all the single Proxmox machines? Would it be the Proxmox Backup Server and to restore the machines to the single servers?

Thanks,
Hubert

you can use our backup server too, but a network storage (NAS, SMB) to store the images/templates should also work fine for what you want :)

take a look at our documentation [0] for some information about that. you could just set up a server that all the nodes can access and load templates from.

also you don't need to use the CLI, just go to Datacenter > Storage > Add, and select the corresponding storage and fill up the wizard

Thanks for the quick response.

Could you quickly explain me or point me to the right documentation.

How do you transfer the templates to the SMB storage? Using the standard backup function? Or is it possible to move VM and CT templates to a different storage over the GUI? Or need that be done over CLI?

see my answer above:
just go to Datacenter > Storage > Add, and select the corresponding storage and fill up the wizard
that's how you'd enable the CIFS/SMB storage for your PVE node.

yes, just choose the SMB storage when making your backup :)

yes, you can move the disks to the SMB server. go to your VM > Hardware, and select the disk you'd like to move, above should be an option called "Move disk" where you can choose the target storage you'd like to move it to.
