Hello proxmox members !

I would like to ask for your help. I want to build a home server for myself. I have downloaded and installed the latest proxmox iso on a mini pc! But after installation unfortunately I can't use the lvm-Thin. I can see it, but I can't install vm. Only local is available.
I tried it on a completely different pc, but same result unfortunately! It is visible in the disks, but unfortunately not usable!
Attached are some links that I have photographed.
If someone could help me with this, I would really appreciate it.

Sincerely:
ovantat

LVM-Thin is a block storage, not a file storage. You can put your VM disks there but not things like ISO files. Your Christmas reading:

https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Storage
Thank you for your reply!

Previously, when I tried it, I uploaded the iso file to the local location (where it says VZDump backup file, ISO image, Container template) and when I installed vm, it installed to the lvm-thin location.
But unfortunately not now. I have a x.x gb disk and only a little of it is usable.

You have what appears from the pictures to be a standard PVE install. In picture #01 you are trying to select storage for a virtual CD-ROM drive, which only accepts ISO files, which cannot be on lvm-thin as that is a block storage. The Disks tab is where you can select a storage for the VM root and that is where lvm-thin will be an option.

Normally you upload an installer ISO for the OS you want in the VM and can select that at the screen in #01, then proceed through the rest of the setup. Again, the manual is your friend. Storage concepts are fundamental to how PVE works.

ETA: To reiterate...you cannot store files on lvm-thin, only virtual disks. That does not make it "unusable" it makes it reserved for a particular purpose. Again the concept of "block device" is pretty important in Linux in general, but especially in PVE.

Hello !

Thank you for your patience! I really appreciate you taking the time to look into it!
But my problem, is that only the local is available on the rest of the space that the physical hdd has, that I can't use. Previously I just had to install proxmox. and then put the isos in the local location and the vm went to the lvm-thin location. So I don't understand now what the problem is. I did not set or unset anything just install and then it did not become lvm thin ! :(

The photo iso02.jpg is where you select the installation media. The installation media can't be on lvm-thin! So the GUI does not offer it! You have to keep going to get to where you size the VM disk and lvm-thin will be an option there.

ETA: You should download an ISO from Debian (I recommend the netinst) or Ubuntu or whatever it is you want to install. Upload that to local and then go through the VM setup. Installing gparted to a VM is not particularly useful as it is a live rescue CD. It is useful for fixing already-installed VM that have disk corruption or where you want to resize a partition.

Hello !

I apologize for the late reply! You were absolutely right! There is an option to lvm-thin during vm installation! Somehow I didn't go any further and "gave up" and have already tried everything, as I mentioned I even put together another machine because of it!
I was convinced it was no good and...
I was a complete idiot!

Thanks again!

I really appreciate it, I really do!
I wish you all the best!
