Hi,
I have the need for some air gapped backups (about 30TB) for my Proxmox data. In the past I just kept a PBS in my office next to my desk that I would turn on in the morning every couple of days, physically disconnect the network after a manual sync and call that backup air gapped. A separate offsite backup was made for the eventually of the office site being physically destroyed (fire etc.). I am exploring ways to enhance this.
Here are the parameters:
1) Proxmox cluster PVE in a server room - about 30TB of data
2) PBS in another (somewhat inconvenient to reach) room, connected via 10GB to the Proxmox cluster. Backed up nightly. (all NVMe drives on the main PBS)
2.5) Remote PBS used for offsite backup, synced nightly. This one has HDD - This remote PBS is not relevant here I think.
3) Tape system not purchased yet. I might buy a LTO5 just to test this out, but in the end LTO8 seems like the sweet cost/capacity spot.
4) I will run regular backups to the tapes and bring them "somewhere" (to be defined) making this air gapped AND offsite. 3-2-1 backup is still met, with the cluster having a copy, PBS having a second copy and tapes holding a 3rd copy. Might be able to get rid of my other offsite PBS, or at the very least let it die from natural causes without replacing it when that time comes.
The PBS that would send data to the tape is local (same building) but simply physically inconvenient to reach. I am therefore hoping to get a direct FC connection between tape autoloader/library and the PBS (via an FC PCIe card). Basically sit the autoloader next to me so I can feed/remove tapes in the comfort of my office. I have read that the connection must be seen as SCSI, and I know nothing about FC. Would that work with the PBS tape system? Will the FC card make it appear as SCSI? I really have no experience with FC.
Additionally, if someone can give me a few pointers on what to buy/look for I'd appreciate (I am not adverse to used eqp). The last time I had a tape drive in a computer was more than 20 years ago. Convenience would be key, so something that would hold enough tape to do a full backup on tape of my 30TB and then spit out the tapes is what I envision.
Thank you.
