you can chroot your PMG .

Yes I have ssh access,

root @ prox:/# passwd root
Enter new UNIX password:
Retype new UNIX password:
passwd: password updated successfully
root @ prox:/#

password does not change in PMG

Make sure PAM is selected in the login box. Maybe it is set to something different.
