Location of PMG

Hello.
I would like to ask a question.
Our current setup is like this
Internet->FW->Exchange Server 2016.

I want to install a configure the pmg but i am not sure what would be the best solution.
1) Inside the local LAN Internet->FW->PMG->Exchange Server
2) outside the local Lan PMG ->FW->Exchange Server

You can setup PMG inside or outside of your network.
Just make sure all mails pass through PMG first before your exchange servers.
