Trying to install on a sata raid 1 array on an Intel Q35 motherboard.
Install goes ok but when I reboot all I get are a bunch of 9A 9A 9A 9A etc
Does ProxMox support installation to serial ATA hard drives ?

Yes, Proxmox VE works on SATA, we use a 2.6.24 Linux Kernel. I assume you used the software raid features, configured in the bios? this "fake" raid is not supported.
We highly recommend to use reliable hardware raid for production systems, for testing just use single drives on this machine (disable the raid in the bios).
Try some nice Areca controllers if you're using SATA drives...
I have a basic little 2-port 3ware SATA controller and though there's nothing inherently wrong with the 3ware controller, it doesn't perform all that wonderfully under Linux compared to other OSes.
