Large increase in spam since removal of commtouch rbl

Hello,
We are currently running the latest pmg 4.1-10 with a unlimited domains license and I have noticed a large increase in spam getting through the gateway. I am not sure if anyone else has noticed this increase but I was wondering if there were any plans to replace commtouch with something else and/or if upgrading to pmg 5 might help us at all with the recent spam increase. Commtouch was one of the most attractive features for us originally and now that it has been removed I'm not sure I see a point in the licensing especially if you can get pmg 5 with a community license. Please let me know.

You need to configure new DNS BL after the Cyren services are removed. There some tricky issues, if you need help in find the right config for you please contact our support via https://my.proxmox.com

V5 got a lot of improvements, also better rules for spam detection, so you should give V5 a change.
Properly configured, the Spam detection in V5 is quite good.

Hi Team

Just curious why Cyren was removed from PMG?

We’ve used Cyren on other platforms and it’s reasonably good at what it does from a user perspective, obviously ProxMox as a provider of anti spam services you would have a better range of experience with larger set of BlackList and SPAM tools.

Are you able to provide a little more info on why Cyren has been removed from PMG and how does this effect how capable PMG is at detecting SPAM after removal?

Honestly we recently run with Cyren (Expurgate/Eleven) and the quality of PMG is much better with my adjustments (read my Advancing Proxmox Mail Gateway thread/guide). For Antivirus for sure Avast is much better than the built-in ClamAV, but it's directly supported and really cheap. Maybe cheaper is Dr.Web, but there is no integration yet (but you can built by yourself).

Hi heutger

Thanks for replying.

Are you advising that you are using Cyren?

Can you please post a link to your post.

Thank you.

Hi,

we recently didn’t use Commtouch RBL but Cyrens Expurgate (recently known as Eleven and available as Spamfence for free for private usage). The quality was so so. We encountered many false-ratings and in conjunction with GDPR and a really strange company construct (recently Eleven was German, but it has now headquarters in Israel and USA, at time of discussion they were not listed in PrivacyShield and although now listed, they don’t cover all data (exclude HR data)) we decided to switch. Quality is now much better and categorization self-controllable.

However, you can still use their RBL if you purchase it by your own. A good set of Prechecks, RBL, Rules as well as a good trained SpamAssassin, maybe with reject, does help out to reduce spam, standard setup with maybe one or two lists for sure has not the same quality.

You're welcome. Please recognize, that this article recently has been rebuilt after many discussions in the original thread to a new guide, but it's still improving, so you should read the full article with the additional adjustment. E.g. on the Countryscoring the GeoIP 1 is still available just on old archive links or you need to follow the guide for the new GeoIP 2 database and should update on a regular basis. Also some topics are xxxx-ed, so they are confidential like you should create your own account with Malwarepatrol or SecuriteInfo, if you like to use ClamAV (I don't recommend any more and would also skip the adjustments) and I recommend invaluements Lists as purchased lists as they do a good job (much better than commtouch, also much easier to integrate). For sure, you can still order the commtouch RBL with Cyren, if you do so and integrate, I believe many readers will welcome your instructions and feedback on quality.
