Hi, due to personal reasons my proxmox hasn't been updated for a long time. I'm using v 6.4-13 now. And a lots of updates in proxmox -> updates. And I would like to come up to the latest version possible of proxmox.

Is it a bad idea with high risks to updating it now? What is the best solution for getting coming up-to-date?

Regards

In addition to @VictorSTS good answer: setup a PVE 6.4 inside of your PVE and test the upgrade there a couple of times in order to get a feeling. I recommend installing and configuring everything as similar as possible to your real machine, maybe also create a couple of containers and then snapshot the machine, try the update to 7 a couple of times and if it works as you expected, snapshot again and to the upgrade to 8. With snapshots you can always go back and have a working copy from which you can start.

In general, Debian updates and also PVE updates are really, really easy compared to anything else on the market. I've been using Debian for over 20 years and it was always very smooth.

Maybe, if possible, boot up host with some live image and make a DD zipped image of your host (& boot) drive, so you can always return it to it's original state.

I always try & do this before any major upgrade.
