[Solved] KVM VMs not starting after apt-get upgrade

I just did an apt-get upgrade (on a PVE 1.5 machine) and since then all my KVM containers won't start. They just say "Starting SeaBIOS" like this:
Screenshot-Debian-5.04 - Proxmox Console - Mozilla Firefox.png
and they use 96-102% CPU. I tried making a new one and it does the same. I didn't pay a lot of notice to what packages were upgrading but but it didn't remove anything, only upgraded some packages. I've attached the dpkg.log (renamed dpkg.txt and with a number of duplicate lines removed).

[update] I tried apt-get upgrade again today. A couple of packages upgrade but it still didn't work. I then reinstalled the 2.6.24 pve kernel (similar to what was suggested in this topic - apt-get install proxmox-ve-2.6.24). It removed a few packages and upgraded a few others and it now works again?!? Very strange but happy that it's all working again - still not sure what happened?

Re: [Solved] KVM VMs not starting after apt-get upgrade

It may well have been useful if I'd done that while it wasn't working, could've then worked out what happened perhaps? Anyway here it is:

proxmox:~# pveversion -v
pve-manager: 1.5-9 (pve-manager/1.5/4728)
running kernel: 2.6.24-11-pve
proxmox-ve-2.6.24: 1.5-23
pve-kernel-2.6.24-11-pve: 2.6.24-23
pve-kernel-2.6.24-7-pve: 2.6.24-11
pve-kernel-2.6.24-8-pve: 2.6.24-16
qemu-server: 1.1-14
pve-firmware: 1.0-5
libpve-storage-perl: 1.0-13
vncterm: 0.9-2
vzctl: 3.0.23-1pve11

Re: [Solved] KVM VMs not starting after apt-get upgrade

Hello,

I'm having the same problem.
my versions are:
pve-manager: 1.5-9 (pve-manager/1.5/4728)
running kernel: 2.6.24-8-pve
pve-kernel-2.6.24-7-pve: 2.6.24-11
pve-kernel-2.6.24-8-pve: 2.6.24-16
qemu-server: 1.1-14
pve-firmware: 1.0-5
libpve-storage-perl: 1.0-13
vncterm: 0.9-2
vzctl: 3.0.23-1pve11
vzdump: 1.2-5
vzprocps: 2.0.11-1dso2
vzquota: 3.0.11-1

Were you able to get it working again? Please let me know how.

I just got it woking with 2.6.32:
pveversion -v
pve-manager: 1.5-9 (pve-manager/1.5/4728)
running kernel: 2.6.32-2-pve
proxmox-ve-2.6.32: 1.5-7
pve-kernel-2.6.32-2-pve: 2.6.32-7
pve-kernel-2.6.24-8-pve: 2.6.24-16
pve-kernel-2.6.24-2-pve: 2.6.24-5
qemu-server: 1.1-14
pve-firmware: 1.0-5
libpve-storage-perl: 1.0-13
vncterm: 0.9-2
vzctl: 3.0.23-1pve11
vzdump: 1.2-5
vzprocps: 2.0.11-1dso2
vzquota: 3.0.11-1
pve-qemu-kvm: 0.12.4-1
ksm-control-daemon: 1.0-3

But openvz is not included in pve-kernel-2.6.32.
Does someone know how to get it working again with 2.6.24 or 2.6.18 kernel?
I would appreciate any help.

Have you tried reinstalling the 2.6.24 kernel. As I said in the edit of my initial post after reinstall of the kernel it all worked fine again. I'm not really clear what happened or why things broke but its all good for me again now. I simply used the following command and all was well:
Code:
apt-get install proxmox-ve-2.6.24
