Kernel Panic - not syncing

Hi

I have just watched a video on youtube by network Chuck and it got me inspired to try Proxmox. I am a long time user of ESXi and an even longer time user of hyper v and virtualbox. but i really like the look of Proxmox.

I have a Lenovo M710q tiny pc with a 7th gen i5 in it. perfect for the task of what I want it for I think.

I grabbed the latest 7.3 installed with ethcher (and again later with rufus using DD mode) but when I install I get a black screen. when I run it in debug the error is long but the upshot is kernal panic - not syncing:VFS unable to mount root fs on unknown block.

another line says please append correct "root=" boot option:here are available partitions: (then its blank.)

any help?

Try to switch off UEFI to legacy/CSM. If the installer runs fine, then boot the disk the same way. Most likely a BIOS-bug as these machines are only tested and intended to run Windows.

Hi,

I should have covered this in my initial post sorry. I initially just tried it with everything default but that didn't work and gave an error about safe boot. I disabled safe boot, tried UEFI, Legacy, CSM off. still nothing. I then tried downloading an older version, v6.xx and I got the same error. I tried VGA and DP as the device has both, but same error. ALmost as if the chipset isnt supported.

I thought Proxmox was supposed to be very compatible?

Have you tried another thumb drive? A quick Google search for 'not syncing:VFS unable to mount root fs on unknown block' determines it to be the message shown when the initrd cannot be locoated/loaded properly. Since you have already tried a different version of the installer, maybe it's just a broken drive?

It is, but when confrontend with quirky quirks or bad UEFI-implementations from non-standard HW (tiny pc is such a case) mainboard, it cannot do magic.

More ideas: try another stick, try true USB2.0-ports on the back, try an USB2.0-hub in between.
I saw boot-problems on different boards of different brands with USB3.0 and USB2.0 always worked.

Yeah the thumb drive is a bit crap so I will try that tonight. Thanks for advice.

Yeah sorry I didn’t mean that it wasn’t widely compatible. I thought Lenovo, dell, HP stuff would be covered.

Sounded like I was being rude after receiving some amazing free software that I couldn’t get working, when the fault is probably all mine
