Hi everyone,

I'm currently trying to install Proxmox Backup Server using the ISO proxmox-backup-server_3.4-1 on my Dell PowerEdge R230, but I keep running into an issue when the installer attempts to set up the bootloader.

System details:

  • Dell PowerEdge R230
  • Installation in UEFI mode
  • 4x Western Digital Ultrastar DC HC320 8TB
  • Configuration: ZFS RAIDZ-2

During the installation, I get the following error:

bootloader setup errors: unable to init ESP and install proxmox-boot loader on '/dev/sda2'

All four drives have been tested using a SMART Offline Long Test with no issues detected. The SMART values are all within normal range, and the drives are brand new with very few power-on hours.

Additionally, I used wipefs -a on all drives beforehand to remove all existing signatures and ensure a clean start.

Please refer to the attached screenshots for the full error message and terminal output during the installation process.

Has anyone experienced something similar or has an idea of what could be causing this?

Thanks in advance!
Noah

Welcome to the Proxmox forum, nbittner!

Just for clarification: Was there a ZFS pool already on those disks before?

Either way, are the disks attached directly or is there a RAID controller inbetween them?
