Hello,
I have a PVE on hp elitedesk 800G3 mini which runs well. I'm planing to buy a Dell PowerEdge R210ii or R220. But I read a lot of topics about people having a video issue during install since Proxmox 7.2 and still present on 8.0.2.

I'd like to know if this issue is still present on the last version 8.1.1, I prefer to avoid spending money on a server that could just be useless cause I need it only for proxmox.

Thanks.

In general, that is hard to say without actually trying it out - it depends on a lot of factors.
There is also the text-mode installer, as well as the option to set nomodeset in the bootloader to avoid loading graphics drivers - the latter fixes most problems anyway.

Also, 8.0.2 is not the latest ISO - it's up to 8.1 now, FWIW.

I prefer to avoid spending money on a server that could just be useless cause I need it only for proxmox.
Well, you have always the option to install plain Debian 12 first and then Proxmox VE on top of that. The linked guide is very extensive and really guides you through the process (which isn't all that complicated to begin with), so it will be definitely possible to get Proxmox VE up and running on that machine.

Hope this helps!

Stay away from 8.1 as that is missing the nomodeset. 8.02 has it included. Your are correct about the issues with video. I have 3 rack mount servers. 2 from Supermicro and one from IBM. All three have the issue. This has been an ongoing issue since 3.5. It is frustrating this is the only linux distro I have this issue.

Thanks for your reply. I already ordered the server, one week ago, still not received it. It's a Dell PowerEdge R220.

So I could install the 8.0.2 and then upgrade to 8.1 ?

Yes you can. That is what I did on my latest install to upgrade drives to NVME.
So if I understand well the issue, that happens only on machines having VGA output. If the server had an HDMI or DP output PVE would install without any issue, this is why it worked on my mini pc hp 800G3.

Correct. I have 3 servers and they all have on board VGA. This is when you have the issue. The NOMODESET does work. I dont know why Proxmox has the issue. This latest round, I used 3 different monitors with same result. There is a post about this issue going back to Version 3.5.

I have some incredible news guys.

I had the proxmox 8.1.3 ISO in my computer. I installed my new Dell R220 server in the rack. I thought to use iDRAC to install proxmox to avoid the graphical problem. I plugged in the VGA cable from one of my monitors into the back VGA output of the server, I configured the iDRAC. I launched the proxmox installation and was watching both screens (the vga plugged screen, and iDRAC virtual screen), guess what, the installation went normally without any issue in both screens.
So I don't really understand the issue of other people now, I was afraid but I had no issue.

I am not clear why some systems have it. I use SuperMicro Servers due to the open nature of the systems. BIOS can be a pain. I used one IBM and it was okay but problematic. I was going to try Dell Servers but there was a lot of bad I seen home users redeploying them. 6 years on Proxmox here and never regretted it. Plenty of drive failures with not a single byte of lost data.

Either case, I am glad to hear this went well. That is really good news. Best of luck with your adventure.

Happens no matter the display connection type (VGA, DVI. HDMI, Display port) as long as the video card is NVIDIA. An iDrac install would not be impacted. Use an AMD Video card or install 7.4 and upgrade to 8.1.

My system does not have any video cards other then the on board video. I have thought about a small one for gpu pass through.
