Is it worth "Upgrading" to a B50pro from a 12gb A2000 ?

As above - i wondered what the state of getting a B50pro running on ProxMox is? ive owned my A2000 for a few years now and its still worth quite good money...not much less than a B50 but the B50 has 16gb in there and obviously is newer tech.

If anyone could advise that'd be great.!

Cheers.

i can't really speak to the performance of each card (maybe there is some relevant benchmark for you out there) but theoretically the b50 can do sr-iov (so "vGPU") while the a2000 can't do that. if that's relevant to you it might be an upgrade.

we recently got some b50 here, but we have yet to test them. the plan would be to have a how to guide in the future, but no promises/timelines ;)

in the meantime here is some forum post with experience for the b50 pro and pve:

Hi there - yes, thats one of the videos i did watch...im still quite a novice user when it comes to GPU stuff. But, if srv-io is the way forward (the new way of doing GPU stuff) then ill probably go for it...

Would that be a fair assessment? (thanks for the reply)

well, sr-iov is the 'pci standard' way to do multiple vgpus on a single pci card. nvidia takes a slightly different approach (you have to "activate" a profile on the virtual function and need a specialized driver)

for normal passthrough, nothing is changing here, so if you're not interested in sharing a single gpu to multiple vms, the b50 won't make a big difference here (except for the specific features on the card like the vram, video de/encoding, and so on)

Right. Ok, thanks for that bit of info, good to know. So, questions....if i were to jump to a B50pro (and yes i only tend to hand out the whole card to one VM) is the process (as it would be an Intel) the same as handing out an onboard Intel card (something which ive never managed to do successfully)!

yes, it should be the same as passing through any other gpu
note that passing through integrated gpus is a bit more complicated usually, and not as well supported as passing through "proper" pci devices.

Right. Ok - i might go for it then as it would be literally no difference in cost. Thanks very much for all of the info.

If all you want to do is (whole) GPU passthrough to a VM then you don't need this particular GPU (with its fancy SR-IOV features) and you can chose from several (cheaper) known-to-work-with-passthrough (consumer) GPUs.

Its not a case of fancy....just the fact i can buy new hardware with 4 more gb of memory, plus my intial question is/was "is srv-io going to be the way forward" if i can use the Intel card the "old way" but it will work with the alternative "new way" then thats great.

Just ordered a B50 - from the look of it the A2000's are worth more....be nice to have a fresh new card.! Many thanks for all of the help and info....ive moved off a couple of VMs that i run 24/7 so i might have a crack at the srv-io config....

you and I are in the same boat, just got mine installed yesterday, although I have not had time to play with it yet
