Is it possible to use Debian original kernel?

After reading the online documents. I know that Proxmox VE has its own kernel. However, the manufacturer of my HBA PCIe card provides only the drivers that match the Debian original kernel.

I plan to install Proxmox VE 8.0 which comes with kernel version "6.2.16-3-pve". The HBA PCIe card driver is for "6.1.0-9".

Will the installation fail If I install Proxmox VE packages without first installing Proxmox VE Kernel?

I would try to jut install PVE 8 with its custom kernel. The Proxmox team already add drivers and stuff like ZFS support to the kernel, so maybe your HBA will work just fine with one of the build-in drivers.

And no idea if the Debian kernel would work, but even if it would that doesn't sound very "production-ready" to me. So much stuff that could go wrong and no one else is using this and no one ever tests if an update would break stuff...

You're right Dunuin. Stick with the Proxmox kernel is correct. The SAN manufacturer's driver works well on 6.2.16-3-pve. This save me a lot of time to install PVE on top of Debian.
