I just tried creating a new VM for Ubuntu 20.04 by selecting my Unraid storage location as the primary location, but when I created the VM, it showed a padlock icon, and shortly thereafter failed.
I then created the same VM using 100G of the local 1TB thinpool and it worked.
My gut tells me that it's not wise to use a remote system for a VM's storage location, but it was an available option while creating it, so it was worth a try. Am I correct?
